Bees, Beekeepers, and Bears in Northern Greece: An example of wildlife coexistance
In the mountains of Central Macedonia, Greece, nature remains wild and unpredictable. There, amidst forests and slopes, beekeepers set up their apiaries. But it’s not only the bees who love honey—the bears do too. For them, a beehive is not just a sweet treat. It’s a true treasure: honey full of energy and brood rich in protein. A hearty meal they are unlikely to leave untouched.
A bear raid, however, can mean devastation. Hives overturned, colonies scattered, months of work lost in a single night. That’s why the local beekeepers found a solution: electric fences that keep the bears away. A simple yet effective measure that reduces damage and allows humans and wildlife to coexist.
Greek Honey at the Forefront: Spyros Skareas mentoring at Farm Food Future
Drawing from his expertise in honey quality, sensory analysis, and international markets, Spyros will use this role to support Greek beekeepers in strengthening their products and expanding to export markets. Through mentoring, he aims to help producers highlight the unique identity of Greek honey and position it competitively on the global stage.
At the same time, his guidance will focus on creating bridges between European importers and honey packers and Greek producers, ensuring that authentic, high-quality Greek honey can reach international buyers directly from the source.

-
How honey tasting really works — yes, there’s a technique to it!
-
The delicious differences between varieties depending on the flowers and regions of Greece

Honey Tasting in our bee yard
We also chatted about the honey tastings and educational beehive visits we host at our estate in Pallini, where visitors can taste different honeys, learn the secrets of the bees, and even get up close to live hives (safely, of course!). It’s a one-of-a-kind experience for food lovers, families, and nature fans.

Inside the Great Taste Awards: A Judge’s Experience from the Tasting Table
When you think of London, you probably imagine Big Ben, red buses, and unpredictable weather. But for me, this trip was all about one thing: food! I had the amazing opportunity to be a judge at the Great Taste Awards—basically, a dream job for any foodie. One full day of tasting incredible products from all over the world? Yes, please!
A Greek in London: Three Days of Food Adventures
I spent three days in London, and while the city has plenty to offer, my focus was clear: the Great Taste Awards. The competition is organized by the Guild of Fine Food, and let me tell you—these people know their stuff. They’ve been running this for decades, and their headquarters had this warm, welcoming vibe. It felt less like a serious competition and more like a big foodie reunion (with some very strict judging rules, of course!).
