Stick Together with Greek Honey: an innovative event for corporate teams

What if honey could bring your team closer together?

In the Honey Tasting Workshop, Greek honey becomes the medium for a structured yet engaging team experience that combines sensory exploration, learning, and interaction. Participants taste selected varieties of authentic Greek honey and are introduced to the fundamentals of sensory evaluation. Through guided comparison and light team-based activities, they share observations, exchange perspectives, and build a common experience.

The format is interactive by design—encouraging participation, activating the senses, and naturally fostering collaboration within the group.

From Honey Tasting to International Food Judging: My Role at the Great Taste Awards

For the second year in a row, I had the opportunity to serve as a judge at the Great Taste Awards 2026, organized by the Guild of Fine Food. This year was particularly meaningful because I was the only judge from Greece participating in the tasting panels.

The Great Taste Awards are widely considered one of the most respected international food tasting competitions. Every year, thousands of products from producers around the world are evaluated by panels of chefs, food writers, buyers, and sensory experts.

During the judging sessions, we tasted not only honey but also many other food products and drinks. This experience offers a very broad perspective on quality, flavor balance, and product identity across different food cultures and production traditions.

For the second consecutive year, Spyros Skareas, Certified Honey Sommelier and international honey judge, participated as a judge at the Paris Honey Awards, one of the most important global honey competitions, held annually in Paris.

The competition took place over two full days, during which hundreds of honey samples were blind-tasted and evaluated. This year’s participation was significantly increased, with samples mainly originating from Europe, the United States, and the Middle East, further elevating the level of competition and confirming the international standing of the event.

Experiential Honey Tasting in Athens: A Unique Idea for Luxury Tourism and Corporate Events

An idea for premium travel experiences & corporate events in Athens

In a unique venue beneath the Acropolis of Athens, we welcomed 100 international visitors from all over the world. Guests from different cultures and continents came together to experience Greece through one of its most distinctive natural products: Greek honey.

The tasting focused on four carefully selected Greek honey varieties, each representing a different ecosystem and beekeeping tradition:

  • Thyme honey – the iconic Greek variety, aromatic and deeply connected to Mediterranean landscapes

  • Pine honey – Greece’s most produced honey, mild, elegant, and mineral-rich

  • Chestnut honey – rare and bold, with bitterness and strong gastronomic character

  • Oak honey – dark, intense, complex, and highly appreciated by experienced tasters

Through guided tasting and storytelling, participants explored flavor, aroma, texture, origin, and biodiversity, gaining a deeper understanding of honey as a natural and cultural product.

Honey Adulteration: What Is Really Happening and How Consumers Can Protect Themselves

The discussion around honey adulteration is not new. However, in recent years the problem has escalated to a level that threatens both consumer trust and the reputation of Greek beekeeping. At Honey Experts—through tasting seminars, educational workshops, TV and radio appearances, and guided visits to beekeeping sites—we meet people every day who ask the same question: “What exactly is the honey I’m buying?” and “How can I identify adulteration?”

The Rise of Artificial Syrups from China

One of the most serious problems today is the massive import of artificial syrups, mainly from China. These syrups are engineered to look like honey—without being produced by bees. They are made from hydrolyzed sugars (rice, corn, beet), chemically modified to resemble natural honey, and most importantly, they contain no pollen.

The absence of pollen—nature’s “biological fingerprint” of every honey—allows those who use these syrups to conceal the true origin of the product.

Honey Fair at Zappeio | Discover Greece’s Finest Honeys

The annual Honey Fair (“Giorti Meliou) at the Zappeion in Athens has become the most vibrant celebration of Greek honey — a four-day gathering where visitors, food lovers, and international buyers can taste the entire spectrum of Greek terroir in one place. This year’s event brought together more than 100 producers from every corner of the country, turning the gardens of the Zappeion into a live map of Greek landscapes, aromas, and traditions.

For foreign visitors, the festival is a unique opportunity:
to explore rare honeys, meet producers face-to-face, and understand the diversity of Greece through authentic flavors.

As Honey Experts, we were proud sponsors of the event, supporting a platform that not only celebrates Greek honey but also helps bridge the gap between producers and the international market.

The Greek Honey Sommelier live on national TV broadcast: A Closer Look at Greek Honey

I recently had the pleasure of appearing on ERT1, on the morning show hosted by Krateros Katsoulis and Maria Iliaki, for a friendly and insightful conversation with journalist Fani Tzomaka. The focus of our discussion was one of my favourite topics: Greek honey—its taste, its authenticity, and how consumers can better understand what they’re buying.

The segment felt less like a formal interview and more like an open, engaging story about flavour, tradition, and the importance of knowing our food. Here’s what we talked about.

What a Greek Honey Sommelier Actually Does

One of the first questions was: “What exactly is a honey sommelier?”
I explained that the role goes far beyond simply tasting honey.

A Honey Sommelier evaluates:

  • the identity and typicity of a variety

  • the aroma and flavour profile

  • possible defects or signs of poor handling

  • the strengths and unique characteristics of each honey

  • the overall sensory experience

The goal is twofold:
to help consumers understand and choose real, quality honey — and to help producers highlight the value of their work.
