This year marked a historic moment for Greek honey at the Great Taste Awards: a Greek honey taster and sensory expert Spyros Skareas was among the judges. I had the honour of being invited to London to evaluate honeys from around the world, alongside an international panel of chefs, buyers, food critics, producers, and other specialists.

The judging process at Great Taste is fully blind and exceptionally thorough. To earn a 3-star award, a product must first receive outstanding marks from its initial panel. Then it must be tasted again — this time by the full team of judges — to confirm its excellence. Only a small percentage of entries make it this far.
This year, many Greek honeys were submitted — and I’m proud to say that several of them received awards, highlighting the remarkable diversity, purity, and craftsmanship found in Greek beekeeping.

As a honey sommelier, it was a privilege and a point of pride to evaluate and award honeys from all over Greece, from forest honeys to floral varieties, and to see them celebrated among the world’s finest.
I hope this achievement encourages even more Greek producers to participate in international competitions and to continue striving for excellence. Greek honey deserves to shine on the global stage — and it’s happening
