Paris International Honey Awards: My Experience as a Judge in an International Honey Competition

Spyros Skareas, Honey Sommelier, shares his experience as a jury member at the Paris International Honey Awards.

On January 25 and 26, 2025, I participated as a judge at the Paris International Honey Awards 2025, held in Paris. Alongside top judges from around the world, I tasted dozens of honey samples, evaluating their taste, aroma, texture, and overall quality.

The honeys mainly came from Europe and the Middle East, with Greek honeys standing out for their explosive flavors and aromas. Particularly impressive were the honeys from the Middle East, with the famous Sidr Honey from Saudi Arabia taking center stage. This honey, derived from the Ziziphus nummularia plant, is considered the “Manuka Honey of the Middle East” due to its high value and unique properties.

The first day of the process began with a detailed explanation of the electronic evaluation platform. Each judge had to enter their scores across various categories (appearance, color, texture, aroma, taste, aftertaste) and note any imperfections or defects. Then, the honey samples arrived in special unmarked containers to ensure the integrity of the process. Every jar I taste in a competition holds the hard work of an entire year. As a judge, my responsibility is significant: to be absolutely fair, to evaluate with knowledge and experience, and to highlight the best honeys using objective criteria.

The competition continued on the second day in an excellent atmosphere, with lively discussions and exchanges of opinions among the judges. Expert tasters from Egypt and Saudi Arabia shared secrets about the distinctive flavors of honeys from their regions, emphasizing the importance of beekeeping in their countries.
